DRILL REPORT: NORAD’s Falcon Virgo over Washington DC August 27, 2009

Who: North American Aerospace Defense Command, the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Capital Region Command Center, the Joint Air Defense Operations Center, the Continental U.S. NORAD Region, Civil Air Patrol, U.S. Coast Guard and others.

CAP Aircraft to Fly Low Over D.C. Metro Area

Civil Air Patrol aircraft will be flying low over the Mount Vernon and Fort Belvoir areas of Northern Virginia throughout the daytime hours Tuesday through Thursday. CAP’s National Capital Wing is assisting the military with simulated aircraft target practice for Task Force Golden Eagle.

Saturday, Aug. 22, Civil Air Patrol’s National Capital Wing will be conducting a disaster relief and search and rescue evaluation exercise. Low flying aircraft can be expected over the Northern Virginia area throughout the day. CAP ground teams will also be in the area working simulated missing persons and downed aircraft searches with Civil Air Patrol aircraft overhead assisting.

Beginning late-night Aug. 27, CAP’s National Capital Wing will be flying low over the District of Columbia as part of NORAD’s Operation Falcon Virgo exercise. The exercise is designed to hone intercept and identification operations, which are carefully planned and closely controlled to ensure NORAD’s rapid response capability to protect the nation’s capital.

Aircraft to Fly Low Over Fort Belvoir, Mount Vernon

There will be low-flying aircraft over Fort Belvoir and Mount Vernon on Tuesday through Thursday, as the Civil Air Patrol’s National Capital Wing conducts exercises. The flying will be from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Then on Aug. 22, the patrol will take to the sky again, this time throughout Northern Virginia, as it conducts disaster-relief and search-and-rescue exercises.

Finally, on Aug. 27, there will be low-flying aircraft over the District, as the patrol participates in a homeland security exercise.
