From the state line south of St. George, Utah to the Hurricane Exit the freeway has been widened and about every thousand yards they have installed cameras with a thick steel transformer for each camera. Also on each pole is either an electromagnetic pulse generator or an RFID reader, I don’t know how to tell the difference. The cameras at this point are not operable meaning they are pointed at the ground.
This part of the freeway system is a natural chokepoint as it collects traffic from Nevada, Arizona, I-70 out of Colorado, all of I-15, and of course Utah.
Has anyone seen anything like this as it was installed with no public knowledge or fanfare and appears to be a way to stop and inspect cars and trucks as they made the side off the freeway extremely wide?
